SmartFile and ExaVault

SmartFile and ExaVault are now Files.com. Your next step does not have to be.

Files.com bought ExaVault in 2022 and SmartFile in 2023, then retired ExaVault Cloud. If you are looking for SmartFile or ExaVault today, you are choosing a new home for your partners’ file transfers. SFTP.cloud gives them SFTP, FTPS and HTTPS into storage you own, and never keeps a copy of a file.

01What happened

Three products became one. The cloud versions now run as Files.com.

SmartFile and ExaVault were separate hosted SFTP and file-sharing services. Both now belong to Files.com, which sells its own platform in their place.

  1. 2022ExaVault

    Files.com acquires ExaVault.

ExaVault ran a cloud SFTP service and an on-premises appliance. Both became part of Files.com.

  2. 2023SmartFile

Files.com acquires SmartFile and combines it into ExaVault.

SmartFile, founded in 2009, offered hosted FTP, SFTP and file sharing, and an on-premises product called FileHub. smartfile.com now shows Files.com pages.

  3. Since thenExaVault Cloud

    The cloud service is retired.

ExaVault Cloud was shut down and its customers were pointed to Files.com. The on-premises appliance is still maintained by Files.com, and you host, run and update it yourself.

If you used SmartFile or ExaVault in the cloud, you are now weighing Files.com against the rest of the market.

SFTP.cloud vs Files.com

02Where to go next

Three ways forward. Each puts your files somewhere different.

The question that separates them is who holds your files and the keys to the storage they sit in. Each comes with a trade-off worth weighing.

Files.com

The successor platform.

Hosted SFTP, sharing and automation in one product, starting at $199 a month.

  • Files are held by Files.com unless you mount your own storage
  • Credentials for storage you mount are stored by Files.com, encrypted
  • Starter includes 1 TB a month of storage and transfer, then $100 per TB

The trade-off: the convenience of one platform means one company holds your files, or the keys to them.

ExaVault appliance

Run it yourself.

The on-premises appliance, formerly SmartFile FileHub, for FTP, SFTP and WebDAV on your own servers.

  • Your files stay on servers you run
  • You patch it, monitor it and keep it reachable from the internet
  • Partners connect to an inbound port on your network

The trade-off: you keep the files, and you also keep the exposed server and every zero-day that reaches it.

SFTP.cloud

Managed, and the files stay yours.

SFTP, FTPS, FTPES and an HTTPS web client, streaming into storage you own. From $2,400 a year.

  • Files stream into your storage only, and are never written to a disk we own
  • Storage credentials stay on your Storage Connector, which only dials out
  • No per-gigabyte or transfer charge, at a published price

What you give up: storage is not included. You bring Amazon S3, Azure Blob, Google Cloud Storage, an S3-compatible store or on-premises storage.

03FAQ

SmartFile, ExaVault and SFTP.cloud, common questions.

Is SmartFile still available?

Not as a separate cloud service. Files.com acquired SmartFile in 2023 and combined it into ExaVault, and smartfile.com now shows Files.com pages. The on-premises product, once called SmartFile FileHub, lives on as the ExaVault appliance.

What happened to ExaVault Cloud?

Files.com acquired ExaVault in 2022 and later retired ExaVault Cloud, pointing its customers to Files.com. The ExaVault on-premises appliance is still maintained by Files.com and runs on servers you host.

Is SFTP.cloud part of Files.com?

No. SFTP.cloud is an independent service and is not affiliated with Files.com, SmartFile or ExaVault.

How is SFTP.cloud different from Files.com?

Files.com holds your files unless you mount your own storage, and stores the credentials for storage you mount. SFTP.cloud never stores your files: they stream through a Storage Connector you run next to your storage, and the credentials never leave it.

How is SFTP.cloud priced?

Prices are published. Shared is $2,400 a year with 15 transfer accounts and 3 Storage Connectors included, and Dedicated, on your own VM, is $8,400 a year. There is no per-gigabyte or transfer charge.

Your files, never on our servers.

Connect your own storage, set up your partners’ accounts and send your first file. Fourteen days, no credit card, and nothing to cancel if it is not for you.
